2027 Goodwood Cup Preview

The Goodwood Cup features on the opening day of the Glorious Goodwood festival, which takes place in late July or early August. The race has been a Group 1 since being upgraded in 2017.

It is open to runners aged three or older and is a real test of stamina over a two-mile trip. The race is the second leg of the Stayers' Triple Crown, the Ascot Gold Cup being the first leg, and then the Doncaster Cup being the final leg.

The 2019 success of Stradivarius meant the runner had won the race for the third year running; the only other runner to win the race three times was Double Trigger, although not consecutively. Stradivarius went on to win in 2020, also making it four successes on the bounce!

How competitive is the Goodwood Cup market? When looking at the over-rounds for the last 20 renewals, the most competitive market was in 2024, when the race had an over-round of 110%. The race in 2007 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 124%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Goodwood Cup, the over-round has been 117%, which means the bookie expects to pay out £100 for every £117 which is bet.

Below you will find the 2027 Goodwood Cup Trends. See which patterns have occurred over the recent renewals that you may be able to use for the next renewal. We also have a section that looks at the Goodwood Cup Trend Analysis.

These are the top three quickest-run Goodwood Cup races over the last 20 renewals:

  1. Kyprios (3:21.53) in 2024
  2. Illustrious Blue (3:22.35) in 2010
  3. Brown Panther (3:22.79) in 2013

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? Over the past 20 renewals, if you had followed the winner of the Goodwood Cup next time out, then you would have backed a total of 8 winners. Backing all 19 runners who have been out since their win at SP next time out would have returned an LSP of -2.27. Whilst we wait for the 2027 Goodwood Cup, remember you can get daily racing predictions from the expert tipsters on the racing predictions page.

The runner that holds the record over the past 20 renewals for the slowest time in the race was set in the 2021 renewal when Trueshan from Alan King under the guidance of Hollie Doyle, won in a time of 3:37.05, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, Kyprios, trained by A P O'Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore set the quickest time of 3:21.53 in the 2024 renewal.

What the expert says...
The Ascot Gold Cup has been responsible for ten of the last twenty winners of this race, with the last coming in 2026 when Scandinavia did the double; in total, seven of those ten winners did the double.
